Spotted Gum (Eucalyptus maculata)

Other Names: Eucalyptus citriodora, Australian hickory, Macula, Maculata, Mottled bark gum, Spotted iron gum.

 

Characteristics: The wide sapwood is usually white in colour, the heartwood varies from dark brown to light greyish brown.  The wood has a rather greasy nature and the grain is slightly interlocked.  The texture is even, but coarse.  The wood is heavy, weighing about 1030 kg/m3 when dried.

 

Working Qualities: Although hard, it works with moderate ease. A good finish can be obtained. It takes screws and glues fairly well, but is hard to nail. It can be stained and polished with good results.

 

Uses: Bridge and general construction, flooring, decking.
