Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia)
Family - Bignoniaceae.
Distribution - Originally from Argentina. One of South Africa's most famous street trees. Recently classified as an invasive alien and no longer allowed to be planted in South Africa.
Other names: Mimosa, Alba, Jacaranda-acutifolia
Characteristics: A close grained and attractive wood. White in colour with attractive markings and a fine texture. The timber weighs 610 kg/m3 when dried.
Working qualities: Easy to work. Glues, sands and stains well.
Uses: Furniture, turnery, cupboard doors and boxes.
