Brazilian Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla)

Distribution - Central and South America. 

 

Other Names: Araputanga, Cedro-I, acajou, mogno, aguano.

 

Characteristics: The wood is variable in colour, ranging from pale or medium reddish-brown to deep rich red, the darkest specimens resembling Cuban mahogany which is considered the true mahogany. The colour of the wood, its texture and grain, varies according to the locality of growth. The dry weight of the wood is also variable, but averages 640 Kg / M3.

 

Working Qualities: A beautiful timber to handle and work. The presence of deeply interlocked grain can cause some grain tearing on quarter-sawn surfaces. The wood takes glue, stains and polishes excellently.

 

Uses: It is a highly prized wood used for top quality furniture and cabinet-making. Used for propeller blades as well as decking and trims for boat building. Also used for high-class internal and external joinery.
