Californian Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens)

 

Family - Taxodiaceae
Distribution - USA, Namely Southern Oregon to California
Other Names: Coast redwood, Redwood, Sequoia, Sequoia pine, Vervona
Characteristics: The Sapwood is very narrow, almost white and the heartwood is a rich dull red or reddish-brown. The grain is straight, and the texture varies from fine and even to rather coarse. The wood is non-resinous, non-tainting and weighs about 420 kg/m3 when dry.
Working Qualities: Works easily, but care is needed in drilling, planing and moulding.
Uses: Pipes, exterior cladding, coffins and interior trim.
